AUSTRALIAN KESTREL

Like the Black-shouldered Kite described on the 5th hole, the Australian Kestrel also favours the Norfolk Island Pines along the adjacent 6th hole to roost and watch for prey. The Australian Kestrel is a small, slender falcon with distinctive russet-brown plumage, pale underparts, gracefully pointed wings, and presents a striking silhouette against the sky.

Unlike many other raptors, the Australian Kestrel often hunts by hovering mid-air, staying almost motionless while scanning the ground for food. It feeds primarily on insects, small mammals, and reptiles, using its keen eyesight to spot movement from above.

This remarkable hunting technique is a familiar sight across rural and suburban Australia. The species is well adapted to a variety of landscapes, including open grassland, coastal dunes, and even urban areas, making it one of the most widespread and recognisable birds of prey in the country.
