BLACK SWANS

Black Swans are elegant, large waterbirds easily recognised by their striking black plumage and contrasting red bills. They are a common sight on the lakes at South Lakes, often seen gliding gracefully across the water in pairs or small family groups.

A courting pair of theses beautiful birds are regularly seen in the lake behind the the 12th tee. It is quite a sight to watch them in glide around the lake dipping their long necks under the water in unison as they feed and court.

Black Swans feed mainly on aquatic plants, diving their heads underwater to reach vegetation growing beneath the surface. During the breeding season, they construct large nests from reeds and grasses at the water’s edge, fiercely protecting their cygnets from potential threats. Their presence adds a sense of tranquillity and beauty to the golf course environment, making them an iconic species here at South Lakes.
