LORIKEETS

The Rainbow Lorikeet is one of the most colourful and energetic birds found around South Lakes especially in the many flowering gums along the 15th fairway. With its vibrant plumage featuring a blue head, green wings and back, and a bright orange-red breast, it is hard to miss these cheeky little characters as they dart between flowering gums and bottlebrushes.

Lorikeets are highly social, often seen in noisy flocks chattering away while feeding on nectar and pollen. Their brush-tipped tongues are perfectly adapted for extracting nectar from native blossoms, making them regular visitors to gardens and parks throughout the region.

Rainbow Lorikeets are not only visually spectacular but also incredibly lively, often performing acrobatic manoeuvres and playful antics in the treetops. Their distinctive screeching calls are a familiar sound and add to the vibrant atmosphere of the area, especially during the morning and late afternoon when they are most active.

The Musk Lorikeet is another vibrant member of the lorikeet family and also often found here at South Lakes. Slightly smaller and more slender than Rainbow Lorikeets, Musk Lorikeets are easily recognised by their bright green plumage, a distinctive red patch across the forehead and ear-coverts, and a subtle blue crown. Like other lorikeets, Musk Lorikeets feed mainly on nectar and pollen.
