GREY SHRIKE-THRUSH

The thick scrub behind the 3rd green and the gardens of the nearby houses make the perfect habitat for possibly the most melodious bird on South Lakes – the Grey Shrike-thrush. Whilst it is often difficult to spot, it’s harmonious calls are a joy to hear as you line up that tricky putt.

The Grey Shrike-thrush is a medium-sized songbird, celebrated not only for its subtle beauty but most of all for its enchanting voice. It’s grey and brown appearance seems dull, but this unassuming bird blends seamlessly into the shadows of dense shrubbery and leafy gardens. Its keen, dark eyes and upright posture give it a quietly attentive air as it hops through the undergrowth, probing for insects, spiders, and the occasional small lizard.

What truly sets the Grey Shrike-thrush apart, however, is its rich and sweet-sounding song—a series of clear, flute-like notes that ripple across the greens and linger in the morning air. Listening for its song is often the best way to locate this shy yet ever-present resident of South Lakes. insert sound of call.
