MASKED LAPWINGS

Here in Australia, Masked Lapwings are more commonly known as Spur-winged Plovers. However, their common name was changed to align this family of birds with similar species around the world.

Masked Lapwings are conspicuous, medium-sized birds commonly seen around the open grassy areas and lake edges of South Lakes. They are easily identified by their distinct black caps, white bodies, and noticeable yellow wattles that hang from their faces, giving them a ‘masked’ appearance. These birds are often observed walking purposefully across lawns and fairways, searching for insects and small invertebrates in the ground.

Masked Lapwings are renowned for their bold and protective behaviour, especially during the breeding season, when they nest on open ground and fiercely defend their territory from perceived threats. Their loud calls and dramatic swooping displays help deter intruders and safeguard their well-camouflaged eggs and chicks. Their presence adds character and excitement to the landscape, so be wary of them around the 11th fairway in breeding season.
