GREBES
As you drive through the entrance to South Lakes Golf Club or play along the 10th fairway, you will no doubt see the many ducks and waterfowl in the lake. Amongst the waterbirds you may have noticed a smaller “duck” that quickly dives under the water when disturbed. This beautiful little bird is actually not a duck, it belongs to an entirely separate species called Grebes.
A pair of Hoary Headed Grebes have been resident on the entrance lake for quite some time and have nested and raised chicks many times. When breeding, their markings become quite prominent. Hoary-headed grebes make a small floating nest attached to the reeds near the 10th green. They breed in late winter and spring so keep an eye out for their new nest and chicks.
Along with the Hoary Headed Grebe, which is quite common on South Lakes, the, Australasian Grebe and the Great Crested Grebe have also been recorded here on the entrance lake. All 3 species of Grebes occur all over Australia and New Zealand, however in New Zealand they are known as “Dabchicks” (pronounced “Deb Chucks 12).
