YELLOW RUMPED THORNBILL
One of our favourite birds on South Lakes is actually the smallest bird you will see here. The tiny Yellow Rumped Thornbill is the largest and best known of the tiny Thornbills. These beautiful little birds are abundant at South Lakes and easily identified as they flash their striking yellow rumps as they fly away when disturbed.
Yellow Rumped Thornbills occur in small family groups in open areas, particularly along the rough of the long fairways such as the 8th. Unlike finches which mainly eat seeds, Yellow Rumped Thornbills forage on the ground for insects. They stay in contact with each other with their constant twittering as they feed or call to each other from the safety of nearby bushes.
Unfortunately, the beautiful little Yellow Rumped Thornbills are in decline due to urban developments. However, it is great to know that our golf course provides a refuge and ideal habitat for them, where they can always live and thrive.
