Our Story

The idea of forming a golf club in Beaudesert was first proposed in 1927. Five years later, on 10 February 1932, fifty enthusiastic locals gathered to discuss the possibility. They were told a club could be established for just £120 ($240), and a motion was carried for twenty-five people to contribute £5 each. The Grand Hotel paddock was considered the most suitable site, and from that meeting, Beaudesert Golf Club was officially formed.

The first course was laid out on the racecourse, and on 23 July 1932, the Chief Justice, Sir James Blair, performed the official opening at El-Bogan, followed by an exhibition match played by Norman von Nida and J. R. Quarton. Golf was enjoyed at El-Bogan for several years before construction began on a new nine-hole layout at the Grand Hotel paddock, the site of today’s course.

Those early years were humble. The first greenkeeper, Mr. Roy Berg, recalled using a horse-drawn mower and carrying water in buckets from the grandstand. Sand greens had to be fenced to keep out cattle, and weekend matches required him to spread sand by hand using a coir mat. Fairways were cut with a single-barrel mower, pulled by a horse collected on the way from Hart Street. With no clubhouse or machinery shed, the facilities were basic, but the spirit of the club was strong.

The nine-hole course opened officially in June 1941, again by Sir James Blair, now Lieutenant Governor of Queensland. A modest clubhouse was built the same year, growing in size and comfort as the decades went by. Food was prepared at home by members, beer was stored in the local butcher’s cold room, and refreshments were sometimes kept in the provider’s home until needed.

Progress came gradually. A motor was added to the mower in 1941, a machinery shed built in 1951, and a simple cow rug was used as a mower cover in 1953. During World War II, the U.S. Army, stationed at nearby Camp Cable, offered to take over and redevelop the course. The club declined, and the Army instead built their own course south of town.

By the 1950s, the club was maturing. A tobacco licence was granted in 1940, but it wasn’t until 1955 that the first liquor licence arrived. With it came new amenities: stools and glasses donated by members, refrigeration in 1957, and the first glass washer in 1959. Extensions, cold rooms, kitchens, and retiring rooms followed over the 1960s and 70s, and by 1978 the clubhouse boasted a beer garden with a roofed concrete deck.

A major milestone came in 1991, when the clubhouse was relocated from Collins Street, behind the third tee, to its current home at 135 Kerry Road. Volunteers famously carried the bar along the fairways to the new site. By this time, Beaudesert Golf Club had grown into a full 18-hole course.

The 1990s brought further change with air-conditioning, the introduction of poker machines, and continual improvements to the course. In 2016, a new irrigation system transformed the fairways, allowing for lush grass and more defined mowing patterns.

Over the years, Beaudesert Golf Club has also played host to golfing greats in their early days. Stars such as Jason Day, Adam Scott, Adam Crawford, and Ross Zielke have all left their mark here. More recently, Maverick Antcliff has emerged as a rising talent, proudly continuing the club’s tradition of nurturing future champions.

Today, Beaudesert Golf Club offers a complete golfing experience. Our course is set in the heart of the Scenic Rim, surrounded by natural beauty and supported by a strong, passionate community.
